Blog Assignment #1 (EDU 305)
Hi, my name is Yaire Guzman, a senior at New Jersey City University and working on a Bachelor's Degree in Health Science. I'm Ecuadorian and Puerto Rican. I have lived in Jersey City my whole life but I was raised in Hoboken surrounded by a ton of family.
Both my parents and my older sister helped me become literate. My dad spoke English and my mom spoke Spanish. When it came to homework my mom would mostly help me and with her doing so I was able to learn more Spanish. By the age of six I was bilingual speaking both Spanish and English fluently.
I started school at the age of four. My parents attempted to put me into pre-school at the age of three however I wasn't a big fan of preschool and didn't go back after the first day. Once I turned four I entered kindergarten. I was very shy and made friends with the most outgoing classmates. In the matter of a few days of being in kindergarten I loved it. I loved going to school to learn and make new friends everyday.
Throughout my elementary school days my biggest challenge was reading/writing. Most of the time I would read and wouldn't understand what I was reading. I would just have to break down every sentence to understand what I was reading. I had major writers in elementary school. My mind would go blank the moment I would need to write an essay for class or even short stories.
Going into middle school and high school I received a lot of help from teachers/tutors and advisors. They helped me with my reading and writing whenever I would run into challenges with both. I never looked up to anyone but my family played a huge role motivating me to achieve a higher education. There are still certain challenges I face with reading and writing however I have overcome some of them throughout the years by applying the techniques I have acquired from professors in the past.
Being literate is essential in our daily living. As I am proud to announce, I am a first-generation college student and an upcoming graduate. I'm appreciative of my education and how far I have come. Knowing that not many people are able to enjoy and experience a higher level of education. That is a luxury that not many people get to enjoy. My parents themselves weren’t able to experience higher education after high school. My family will always be the source of my inspiration to succeed in life and advance to a higher education level.
Yaire, Thank yo for this inspiring introduction and for sharing a part of your story. How wonderful that you are bilingual and have such a supportive family! Congratulations on approaching your undergraduate graduation.
